On top of the workshops and cooking activities, attendees can partake in various Camp Nejeda activities, such as ziplining, bonfires, archery and much more.
Activities include swimming, field games, arts and crafts, group activities, field trips and other exciting events.
The disease process associated with Type 2 diabetes (which leads to heart attacks, strokes, and other crippling illnesses) can be slowed and even partially reversed by controlling blood glucose and other cardiovascular disease risk factors. There are two main types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2.
"It's nice to know as a kid that you're not the only one. Biron, the owner of the Hummingbird House Restaurant in Newton, is donating a healthy lunch for boot camp participants.
Biron said the lunch will include salads, soups, gluten-free and vegan options and sandwiches.
King's workshop, "Diabetes Burnout: Finding a way forward when you feel like giving up," will present emotional coping techniques to attendees. They have no hope and it's very difficult for them to get back on track," she said. To be able to share one's experiences with another in similar shoes and learning from that sharing experience can be one of the most profound forms of support, she added.
"It's much like job burnout," said King of diabetes burnout. You never get a vacation (and) you don't get to take a day off." Diagnosed with type one at 8 years old, King said that growing up she had a wonderful support network from her family. "What Camp Nejeda is really offering is the opportunity to delve into that and figure out how to manage that (emotional) side of diabetes, which is so important," King said.
